This is a basic guide to set up an email server on a home network. It will use sendmail as the MTA and for forwarding outgoing mail to an ISP SMTP server, dovecot as the internal IMAP server, and fetchmail to download emails from POP3 servers.

First steps:

  • Get Optware up and running (this howto was tested on a ddwrt box)
  • ipkg-opt install openssl
  • ipkg-opt install libdb
  • ipkg-opt install procmail
  • ipkg-opt install fetchmail
  • ipkg-opt install sendmail
  • ipkg-opt install dovecot

On to the configuration - Dovecot:
